Volunteer of the Year Award Non-Resident: Ann Huddleston

Ann Huddleston was recognized recently for the Non-Resident Volunteer of the Year Award at the 22nd Annual Conference of LeadingAge Oklahoma.

This award is given to a non-resident for outstanding contributions. Their uncompensated contributions have come from service to the organization in one of many ways:  as a board member, financial expertise, special events, and resident relations.  Their contributions have resulted in positive changes for a Community; may have contributed to an unmet need; and helped to preserve the dignity, well-being and independence of residents.

Mrs. Huddleston has a heart for serving others. She and her husband Larry have served as Worship Leaders for Covenant Place of Tulsa’s Worship services for more than a year. In addition to sharing her musical talents, Ann has devoted time to planning the services and making sure residents know about them and feel welcome.

Ann pays attention to the needs of others and looks for ways to make them happy. One particular resident loves playing the piano, but has lost some vision capacity. Ann has had him play at the worship services. She spends time selecting music he knows and enlarging the sheet music so that he can read it. She makes a special effort to make sure that he feels included and valuable, and can continue an activity he enjoys.

Ann also spends time as a companion to another resident. She takes her to appointments and to visit her husband. More than just providing assistance, Ann has spent time with this resident, getting to know her and creating a meaningful relationship. Ann’s children have even taken time to visit this resident and play music for her. The impact this time and service have had on this resident has been priceless.

Frequently, Ann assists in coordinating events and activities at Covenant Place of Tulsa. She took the lead in coordinating a musician for the Communities Flag Raising Ceremony. Ann took care of communications and logistics, ensuring a successful event for the community.  Ann also calls Bingo every Monday afternoon and it is obvious that the residents enjoy the interaction with Ann very much!

Ann consistently demonstrates her commitment to serving others and enriching the lives of the residents and their families. Ann recently agreed to join the staff at Covenant Place of Tulsa as a PRN Concierge team member. She now helps out periodically at the front desk, which is very fitting that she can sometimes serve as the face of the community!
