Did you know that the 1908 Ford Model T had a 20 horsepower engine?
Today, you can buy a riding mower with the same horsepower! Covenant Place of Tulsa, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Bixby, OK, celebrates a technology-themed National Assisted Living Week from September 11th-17th.
National Assisted Living Week® was established in 1995. According to the National Center for
Assisted Living (NCAL), this week provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones,
staff, volunteers, and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in
caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance
encourages assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and
activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the
public about this distinctive aspect of long-term care.
National Assisted Living Week is kicked off on September 11th, Grandparents Day. National
Grandparents Day was created in 1978 by a federal proclamation, passed by Congress and
signed by President Jimmy Carter. National Grandparents Day was first celebrated on Sunday,
September 9, 1979.
However, Grandparents Day began much earlier. In 1970, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade
began a campaign to establish a special day to honor grandparents. Her enthusiasm soon
attracted the support of businesses, churches, civic groups, and political leaders.
Each celebration creates important conversations among, residents, family members and staff.
National Assisted Living Week picks its theme annually to help increase awareness in each
topic making sure residents are staying involved. Grandparents Day is a great way to start this
week as it begins the conversations about our seniors as grandparents within their families and
have them be a part of this week-long topic.
